COLUMBUS – Columbus Fire Department firefighters battled a house fire Saturday at 2676 Central Avenue.
Firefighters were alerted to the blaze at 4:10 a.m. after a female said she woke to the odor of smoke. She then discovered a small fire within an enclosed breezeway leading from the home to the garage.
Everyone was able to escape unharmed.
The fire engulfed the breezeway in flames and spread to the home.
Firefighters were able to save the family’s cat unharmed.
Firefighters worked for approximately 30 minutes before the fire was under control.
Firefighters said the home and contents are considered a total loss estimated at approximately $200,000. The Salvation Army is providing emergency services to the family at this time.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but firefighters believe it started from a heat lamp used to warm baby chickens.
