BLOOMINGTON – Bedford North Lawrence’s Brax Huber won the 400 meter dash as the Stars finished 9th during the IHSAA Unified track state championships on Saturday at Indiana University.
Noblesville won the team title with 112 points, followed by Fort Wayne Carroll (109) and Valparaiso (109). BNL, the defending state champion, scored 75 points in the 12-team field.
Huber clocked 53.54, setting a new program record, to win his event. Other top finishers for the Stars included the boys 400 relay (second in 49.48 with Joshua Morales, Ethan Robinson, Koltyn Clute and Huber), Trace Walters (first in his shot put section at 40-0 1/2) and Alex Nubbie (second in the shot put section at 24-1).
Huber and Walters were named All-State.
“This was a tough day for the kids,” BNL coach Mike Branam said. “They fell a bit short of their ultimate goal of a repeat, but I am beyond proud of their heart and their effort.
“This was a tough series. Teams throughout the state are getting tougher and tougher every year. It was an honor to be at the state finals. I told the kids that all I wanted was for each one of them to give their best. They did that and I am proud of them. Being a top ten team is an honor in its own right.”
