Two arrests made when officer spots a vehicle swerving on State Road 37

BEDFORD – Two people were arrested after a Bedford Police officer noticed a dark-colored car traveling north on State Road 37 at 5th Street at 1:28 a.m. swerving within the lane of travel on Saturday, June 10.

The officer reported the driver was traveling 70 miles per hour in a 55-mile-per-hour zone. The officer stopped the driver.

Jama Hobbs

The driver was 37-year-old Jama Hobbs, and her passenger was 29-year-old Steven Grayson, both of Bedford.

Steven Grayson

Police say Hobbs was intoxicated. While speaking to Hobbs, Grayson began “talking over her”. Hobbs told police she thought she had a centipede crawling on her and that is why she was speeding and swerving. After requesting paperwork for the vehicle and identification, Hobbs was asked to step out of the vehicle. She admitted she had been drinking.

Hobbs failed several field sobriety tests. Grayson continued to yell from inside the vehicle during Hobbs’ tests.

Police reported Hobbs had a blood-alcohol content of 0.161.

She was detained on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, OWI with a prior conviction, and OWI endangerment.

While being handcuffed, Grayson exited the vehicle and approached the officers and Hobbs. Police say he was aggressive. He “became emotionally distressed and began crying”. He got loud and was “verbally agitated towards officers and the situation”.

Grayson was pacing up and down the highway. He was told he needed to contact a sober licensed driver to retrieve the vehicle or it would be towed. He walked to the car, got a cell phone, and walked back toward the officers raising his voice. While in the police vehicle, Hobbs then began yelling to roll down the window and was warned to stop screaming.

Grayson attempted to make a call and then walked away from officers along the highway. Grayson was asked to come back. He told the officers he would do what he wanted. Grayson said he was going to kill himself by beating his brains out on the guardrail.

Grayson was then ordered to lay on the ground or he would be tased. He complied and was detained.

Grayson continued to yell he was going to kill himself.

Grayson was transported to jail on charges of public intoxication and disorderly conduct.

Hobbs was transported to IU Health Bedford Hospital for a blood draw. Those results are pending. She was then transported to the Bedford Police Department. There she was administered another breath test and blew 0.181. She was then transported to jail.

While inventorying the vehicle, police found several partially full and empty alcoholic beverage containers.

The vehicle was towed by Mikel’s Wrecker Service.
