BRAZIL – High schoolers interested in law enforcement careers will converge on the Indiana Sheriffs’ Youth Ranch on July 10-14 for the training retreat’s first-ever Explorer Academy.
Twenty-four high school leaders will be selected from applicants representing Clark, Clay, Owen, Parke, Putnam, Sullivan, Vigo, and Vermillion counties. Some young leaders will stay at ISYR for the week; others will be transported each day to and from the 62-acre training retreat outside Brazil, Indiana.
Students, parents, and guardians from the pilot counties may pick up detailed information during regular business hours at their local sheriff’s office. Applications should be completed and returned as soon as possible and no later than June 30. A routine athletic physical is required to attend.
“This year’s pilot academy will offer a mix of public safety training and recreation,” said Scott Minier, executive director of ISYR. “During morning hours, students will learn about K-9s, first aid, crime trends, substance abuse, cybercrimes, dispatching, and investigations. Afternoons will be spent team building while swimming, fishing, kayaking, flying drones, shooting archery, and safely riding ATVs.”
Garmong Construction Services of Evansville, Indianapolis, and Terre Haute is presenting sponsor for this year’s inaugural Sheriff & Police Explorer Academy.
“A generous grant from Garmong, one of Indiana’s leading construction management companies. is allowing us to offer our 2023 Academy at little to no cost to students and parents,” added Minier
Minier said additional counties and students will be invited to participate in future years as more privately funded sponsorships, facilities and amenities become available.
