Bedford Firefighters promoted, bids rejected for improvements at Englewood Fire Station

BEDFORD – The Board of Works on Tuesday, approved the promotion of John T. Porter to Senior Firefighter. He will fill the position after the resignation of Andrew Roberts.

The board also approved 2nd Class Firefighter Ethan Lipsomb’s permanent status after completing his probation requirements.

The City of Bedford is working to renovate Station 3 – Englewood. The station was constructed in 1976. The building sat empty from 1976 until 1978 when six firefighters were hired to man the station. The station is now manned by two firefighters per shift and responds to incidents on the south side of the city.

However, two bids were received for the project that didn’t meet expectations and were rejected Tuesday.

Bedford’s Englewood fire station was closed temporarily on November 14, 2022, after birds entered the building, causing health concerns for firefighters.

Bedford Fire Department has three fire stations throughout the city. Those fire stations include Headquarters at 1900 H Street, Station 2 at 5th Street and Lincoln Avenue, and Station 3 at 29th and Illinois Streets.
