According to Indiana State Police, the incidents happened from November 1, 2021, through April 7, 2022.

In March 2022, Trooper Humphrey began investigating numerous reports of thefts and burglaries that had occurred in and around Mitchell.

These incidents occurred on various, and unknown exact dates, between February 1, 2022, and March 31, 2022.

There were multiple reports that the CSX Railroad building at 423 West Mississippi Avenue had been burglarized. In addition, a Mitchell Police vehicle had been broken into and another vehicle had been broken into at a mechanic shop on Grissom Avenue.

In one of the CSX Railroad buildings two Samsung tablets were stolen and were tracked to a home in the 300 block of West Frank Street and then police lost the signal.

On April 7, 2022, at 8:30 a.m. the owner of the Lawrence County Farm Supply located at 409 West Main Street in Mitchell reported the feed mill had been broken into. The wall safe and the business was in disarray, power tools were missing, and approximately $5,000 in cash. Damages to the building exceeded $15,000. The surveillance system had been tampered with and the DVR equipment had been stolen.

Detective Zack Robbins checked several businesses in the area and found a video of three people in the alley behind the feed store. One of those individuals was Nicholas Dunn.

Police also found distinct muddy shoe prints outside and inside the feed mill.

Police then obtained a warrant for a home at 303  Mississippi Avenue. When police served that warrant Nicholas Dunn had been at the home but left. He was detained a short distance from the home. Those same muddy footprints with that distinct pattern were found in the driveway of the home.

Police detained Dunn and he was questioned. He told police he had been out walking to meet up with another male. That male told Dunn they were “committing felonies”.  Police found Dunn with a knife that was reported stolen from the feed mill.

During the search of the home on Mississippi Avenue, police found abandoned vehicle stickers stolen from the Mitchell Police vehicle.

At a home at 306 Mississippi Avenue police found numerous stolen items from the various burglaries. The woman at the home admitted to knowing the items had been stolen. Police also found shoes that had left the same distinctive prints.

The information was forwarded to the Lawrence County Prosecutor’s Office and a warrant was issued for Dunn’s arrest.
