ELKHART CO. – Troopers with the Indiana State Police Toll Road Post are investigating a serious crash between two semis and an SUV that blocked westbound lanes of the Indiana Toll Road near mile marker 93.
On June 23, 2023, at approximately 3:10 p.m. Indiana State Police Dispatch began receiving calls of a serious crash involving multiple vehicles on the Indiana Toll Road.
Preliminary investigation by Sgt. Gamaliel Reeves indicates that a black 2021 Chevrolet SUV was traveling behind a white 2021 Freightliner in the right lane when traffic slowed due to a worksite west of the crash.
A gray 2020 Volvo semi also traveling in the right lane failed to slow down and crashed into the rear of the Chevrolet, pushing it into the guardrail to the right and causing extensive damage to the SUV. The Volvo then crashed into the back of the flatbed trailer being towed by the Freightliner.
This impact caused a load of steel coils on the flatbed to break free. The Freightliner came to a rest in a paved crossover in the center median. The Volvo came to a stop on the right shoulder. The vehicle had extensive damage to the cab, entrapping the driver.
The driver of the Chevrolet was transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend with serious but not life-threatening injuries.Â
The driver of the Volvo had to be extricated from the wreckage and was then transported to Memorial Hospital by Memorial MedFlight. After a medical evaluation, the injuries to the driver of the Volvo are considered minor.Â
The driver of the Freightliner was not injured.
Westbound traffic continues to be diverted off at County Road 17 Exit 96 while crews continue to clear up the crash scene.
The Indiana State Police was assisted by Elkhart Fire and EMS, Osolo Township Fire and EMS, Cleveland Township Fire and EMS, Memorial MedFlight, and Tom’s 24-Hour Towing.
