BEDFORD – Families from the Rabbit and Poultry Club at the Lawrence County Fair pitched in today to get the barn in order for the upcoming fair.
Arriving at the fairgrounds around 8 a.m. Saturday morning to begin the process, adults and kids of all ages worked together to methodically destruct and clean the cages, wash food bowls, and sweep the floors.
Rabbit Club Leader Keri Barker, and Poultry Club Leader Roger Dotts organized the event. He explained that the whole thing is based on volunteer work. Numbers of volunteers have been low since Covid began in 2020, but are gradually beginning to pick up again, breathing new life into fair events.
Even the little ones got involved, wielding wash rags and soapy water, or brooms almost as big as they were.
“We’re washing dishes – or their food and water bowls,” George explains, busy helping Zizi and the others, wash-rag and dirty bowl in hand. “To keep the chickens safe and make sure they don’t get any diseases.” George and his family have been volunteering for three or four years, and enjoy helping set up for the fair and keep the animals safe.
The Atkinson-Leaneagn family, as well as the Coopers, Barkers, Wagoner, Sniders, Southerns, and others, spent hours working together in the Saturday sun to get the barn in shape for the fair in a few weeks. Also in attendance were Hunter Sneed, Isabell Barker, Reagen Walls, Wyatt Williams, Gracie Williams, Jocelyn Williams, Isabell Barker, Ryder and Kruz Cooper, John and Andrew McKnight, Josie Lamm, and Max Batman.
