Know the law before setting off fireworks

ORLEANS – The Orleans Marshal’s Department is reminding residents there is a state law regarding setting off fireworks.

As the 4th of July holiday is fast approaching it’s important for everyone to be aware of these laws. Always keep in mind that those setting off fireworks will be responsible for any damage made to surrounding properties caused by the careless use of fireworks. Bottle rockets can cause damage to roofs and also create fire hazards.

Officers recommend you only use fireworks that can be contained on your property and are not hazardous to your neighbor’s property.

The following are the laws of the state of Indiana regarding fireworks.

  • State law bars anyone under the age of 18 from having fireworks unless they are accompanied by an adult.
  • Specially designated days for fireworks use are June 29th through July 3 and July 5 through July 9. On those days fireworks may be used between 5 p.m. and 2 hours after sunset. On holidays fireworks may be used between 10 a.m. and midnight this includes the 4th of July.
  • Damaging someone else’s property could result in a fine of $5,000 as well as one year of imprisonment. Restitution to property owners with damage could also be assessed.
  • Anyone using fireworks under the age of 18 without the presence of an adult could be fined up to $500.00 per infraction.

The Orleans Marshal’s Department wants everyone to enjoy their 4th of July holiday and use fireworks responsibly and safely.
