Sheriffs extend free Law Enforcement Youth Academy application deadline

BRAZIL – High schoolers from nine Indiana counties interested in law enforcement careers now have seven additional days to register for a free, weeklong leadership academy to be hosted July 10-14 at the Indiana Sheriffs’ Youth Ranch.

Students, parents, or guardians may pick up detailed information during regular business hours at the Clark, Clay, Grant, Owen, Parke, Putnam, Sullivan, Vermillion, and Vigo county sheriffs’ offices. Applications should be completed and returned to each sheriff’s office as soon as possible and no later than July 7.

No fees will be charged to students and parents, however, an athletic physical is required.

Twenty-four student leaders will be selected from applicants representing this year’s pilot counties. Young leaders will receive free room and board from ISYR for the week and be safely transported to sessions at the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office, Indiana State University, Terre Haute Police Department, and Brazil Fire Department.

“This year’s pilot academy will offer a mix of public safety training and recreation,” said Scott Minier, executive director of ISYR. “During morning hours, students will learn about K-9s, first aid, crime trends, substance abuse, cybercrimes, dispatching, and investigations. Afternoons and evenings will be spent team building while swimming, fishing, kayaking, flying drones, shooting archery, and safely riding ATVs.”

Minier said additional counties and students will be invited to participate in future years as more privately funded facilities and amenities are completed.
