Highway Department crews remove trees from roadways

BEDFORD – Highway Superintendent Brandi Webb reported crews have been busy the last few days removing trees from roadways due to powerful storms that hit Thursday, and continued through the weekend.

“Crews cut and removed more than 79 trees,” added Webb. “45 of those trees were removed during Thursday’s storm. They had to leave five that were down in powerlines and then returned on Friday to remove them. I want to thank all the first responders and officers that helped.”

Webb reported that delays continue on Bridge 150.

The closing of the bridge has been delayed until Frontier Communications moves their lines and CSX Railroad approves the demolition plan.

Commissioner Rodney Fish asked if there was something the commissioners could do to get Frontier to move their lines. Webb replied no.

“Both have still not been done,” she added. “Once those two things are done we close the bridge around 30 days after that. We are hoping to start in August.”

Bridge 150 is a continuous encased steel beam bridge constructed around 1930-1935

The Lawrence County Commissioner approved a contract with CLR for $2.6 million to replace Bridge 150. The county will pay $319,536.10.

Commissioner Wally Branham asked about a road closed ahead sign that is being placed on Back Creek Road by INDOT.
Branham is requesting the sign be placed further down so it does not block the field entrance.

“If the sign is placed where they are wanting to place it, the farmers cannot get into their soybean fields because the equipment will not fit,” he added.

Webb said she will contact INDOT and have them move the sign so it doesn’t block the field entrance.

Highway crews will begin paving Jasper McKeaigg Road on July 17.

The Highway Department has received its third tractor and crews are out mowing.
