BEDFORD – Today marked the first day of Bedford North Lawrence’s Welcome Week! Freshmen roamed the halls in groups, led either by veteran students or teacher guides, learning the locations of classrooms, getting their pictures taken for school, and learning their schedules.
Sydnee Wykoff, 17, student Freshman Guide of two years speaks about returning to school, her favorite events, and helping freshman find their way around.
The sound of voices, laughter, and footsteps echoed in the halls. Staff and students familiar with BNL led groups of students, organized by last names, through the school. Students like Sydnee help the new arrivals find their way around the campus, without misleading them. Some other students have been known to inform freshmen of the non-existent fourth floor to confuse them.
The student guides, however, are genuinely helpful and happy to introduce incoming teens to their school.
Lynlee Rogers, the BNL administration assistant, explained that BNL has set its students up for success with the new advisory system so that students who may have issues getting to tutoring sessions before or after school can instead have a period where extra class help – or free time if you’re caught up – is offered during school hours.
She compared her own high-school days to BNL’s systems, and was proud of the support system it offers students should they need extra help.
Photography teacher Errin Layers, one of BNL’s four art teachers, looks forward to taking part in the advisory sector of school and helping students enjoy their time in the arts.
A boisterous group of freshmen were very excited when they learned of the free pizza offered at the event and were more than happy to pose for a picture.
Most of the students seemed excited rather than nervous, and the groups were loud, friendly, and eager to explore.
BNL seems to have managed a successful, fun introduction to high school!
