MITCHELL – Yesterday, Heidelberg Materials in Mitchell, represented by Plant Manager Tracy Crowthers, gave a report of their company’s progress since beginning construction on the $600 million plant in 2019, to the Lawrence County Council.
Despite covid slow-downs that moved the start-up date from 2022 to 2023, the company kiln, one larger and more efficient piece of machinery replacing 3 at their previous plant, was fired up in April this year, producing their first batch of cement.
Currently, the company provides jobs for 173 employees, with room for a handful of positions still remaining. The hope expressed for employment has the company hovering right around 180 employees.
During the height of construction, the number of temporary workers topped out around one thousand, creating an influx of business in the Mitchell area for the last couple of years.
