BEDFORD – On Tuesday, July 25, at 7:22 p.m. Bedford Police officer responded to the 2000 block of Washington Avenue after a woman reported she had found a handgun inside her son’s backpack.
The woman told police her son had been hanging out with a person who was recently released from the Department of Corrections and she was concerned.
She said she came home from work and had a “bad feeling” so she decided to go into her son’s room and look around. The first place she looked was in her son’s backpack and found the handgun and then called the police.
Police then asked the 16-year-old male where the handgun came from and he admitted it was taken from a vehicle. The teen was detained and transported to the Bedford Police Department.
The teen told police he and a friend were riding around town when they noticed a vehicle with a bulletproof vest inside. The two thought there may also be a gun in the vehicle. They stopped and opened the vehicle door and took a backpack out of the vehicle. The gun recovered was a black Heritage Rough Rider .22-caliber revolver and a plastic box containing 69 rounds of .22-caliber ammunition was also confiscated.
The teen was charged with theft of a firearm, dangerous possession of a firearm, and unauthorized entry to a motor vehicle. He was transported to the Dickinson Juvenile Justice Center.
