Demand for Indiana Limestone products continues

BEDFORD – Last night’s Lawrence County Council meeting, held at 6:30 p.m., provided the approval of past and continuing tax abatements for Indiana Limestone that were granted in 2019.

The tax abatement, totaling $11.4 million, was used to acquire new equipment which in turn allowed the implementation of new processes.

Indiana Limestone, now a part of Polycore, continues to ship limestone locally, nationally, and even internationally, as far as Spain and China.

Despite COVID-19, demand for limestone products remained steady, and the 278 employees were kept throughout the pandemic.

Some of the updates aided by the tax abatements include what is essentially a giant chainsaw that cuts through stone without water. This has greatly simplified and bolstered efficiency in the quarry work. Where workers utilized jackhammers to split the rock, the saw now does the same job in a more efficient, streamlined process.

The stone saws are able to cut horizontally and vertically, and can now cut directly into a wall of stone.
