Bedford man pulled over for missing license plate, arrested for possession

BEDFORD – On Friday, July 28th at 7:46 p.m. Officer Daugherty was conducting a routine patrol on Mitchell Road when he saw a beige 2002 Chevrolet Impala heading north with no visible license plate and an un-belted driver.

The officer pulled over the car, noting the temporary paper plate in the rear window, and identified the driver to be Shawn Brown.

Officer Daugherty requested Shawn’s license and registration and informed him of the reason for the stop. Shawn produced his license and registration and noted that he owned the vehicle, purchasing it a few months before. Officer Daugherty found the registration was expired and Shawn’s license was suspended with a prior.

Officer Jones arrived on the scene and asked Shawn to exit the vehicle. Shawn did so without incident. Jones received consent to search the vehicle while Officer Daugherty completed the citation.

Inside, a black wallet police found a cut red straw with drug residue, one full and one partial orange six-sided tablet imprinted with N8 in a plastic bag, and a full and a partial blue pill with M on one side and 30 imprinted on the other. Found in the console was a glass cartridge containing a waxy substance.

Shawn was cuffed and placed in the back of Officer Daugherty’s unit. Shawn denied knowledge of his suspended license. Sergeant Gerkin arrived on the scene and identified the pills. The six-sided orange tablet was Suboxone, a Scheduled III controlled substance and the blue tablet was Oxycodone, a Scheduled II controlled substance.

Shawn admitted the straw was used to take his Suboxone, but denied knowledge of the blue tablet, saying he didn’t know how it got into his wallet.

Shawn was transported to the Bedford Police Department for booking, then to the Lawrence County Jail
for housing. Shawn’s vehicle was inventoried and recovered by Blands with no hold. All evidence was taken to the BPD, photographed, processed, packaged, and locked up in inventory.

The glass cartridge tested positive for Marijuana.

Shawn was given a state citation for expired registration and no seatbelt, and a written warning for improper display.

Shawn Brown was arrested for driving while his driver’s license was suspended with a prior, possession of a Scheduled II controlled substance, possession of a Scheduled III controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of marijuana.
