Smithville crews respond to severe weather damage in Orange County

ORANGE CO. – Damaging storms, including a confirmed tornado in Dubois County, moved through the Orange County region early August 7 and produced widespread power outages and structural damage. This includes downtown Paoli, where some buildings suffered serious roof and other damage.

Smithville technical crews have responded and maintained internet and phone service through onsite generators in Smithville service areas in Orange County. Ten Smithville sites are currently on generator power. Only a few Smithville customers have actually reported outages, but Smithville is actively monitoring and responding to calls.

Downed trees and other damage in some areas have blocked roads and initially hampered the repair of aerial lines, but Smithville crews continue to work to restore connectivity in those instances as quickly as possible.

Orange County REMC reported some 2,700 residents and businesses were without power (particularly in French Lick and Paoli) Monday afternoon. According to Duke Energy, some 4,000 residents and businesses in the greater Louisville area (including Orange County in southern Indiana) served by Duke were reported to be without power as of Monday afternoon.

Smithville service outages can be reported by calling 800-742-4084, option 1. Updates are also posted at https://www.smithville.com/support/account/.
