MITCHELL – On Wednesday, August 30 at 11 a.m., the White River Humane Society plans to break ground at the location that will soon house its new facility.
The new facility will be built on a little more than four acres at 1702 Wesley Chapel Road, in Mitchell, on the corner of State Road 37 South and Wesley Chapel Road.
The land was donated to the White River Humane Society by Dana and Brenda Dunbar.
“We can not thank them enough for this generous donation,” said WRHS Board member Debbie Stailey. “We have been looking for land for years suitable to build a new facility.”
The new facility will be a state-of-the-art facility.
“We are working on the facility design now,” she added. “Every single animal will be housed inside the heated and airconditioned facility. There will be no outside kennels. We will have a fenced-in area for the animals to go outside and exercise. This will be a modern facility with bigger kennels. It will meet all of our animals’ needs.”
But there is still a lot of work to be done and money to be raised before the facility can be completed.
“We are looking at a lot of money to get this up and running,” added Stailey. “We have a building fund established but we have a long way to go, We need donations to reach our goals. Every dollar that is donated helps.”

A new facility allows WRHS to efficiently carry out its vision, which is to help and prevent unwanted and abandoned animals in Lawrence County.
But you can also help by spaying and neutering your pets.
The shelter currently has $50 off spay and neuter vouchers available to Lawrence County residents thanks to a grant from the Lawrence County Community Foundation. More information is available online at www.whiteriverhumanesociety.org
