BEDFORD – Are two heads better than one? Bedford North Lawrence’s new co-coach approach will attempt to prove that philosophy.
Former BNL runners Amy Spence (1991) and Danielle Garrison (2014) have combined forces, taking over after the departure of Jill Vance, to lead their alma mater during the 2023 campaign. They have inherited a standout at the front of the pack and potential strong chasers to make a run at postseason success.
Each brings a unique perspective. Spence is the experienced runner and former coach, more measured in her viewpoint, while Garrison is the energetic and enthusiastic voice, fun and positive. “So together,” Spence said, “we thought we would be really good. We’ve worked together a lot.”
What they’re working with is an interesting roster of seven. It starts with junior Francesca Orozco, a two-time regional qualifier who will set the tone on the course.
“Frannie is our veteran, and she does a good job of leading,” Spence said. “If anyone is discouraged, if anyone gets left behind, she rallies the troops and supports everyone. She is not afraid to run fast, she’s not afraid to compete. She’s also very coachable and listens to what we’re coaching her to do. She’s hoping to bring her team with her.“
The sport requires a fivesome for team scoring, and Spence believes the Stars have that covered. She is looking for the emergence of sophomores Gracie Simmerman, Jabrie Sullivan and Madison Chandler to fill scoring spots. Meryl Klein is the lone senior on the squad, while freshmen Elise Williams and Adalynn McIntosh will seek to move up in the pack.
“We have a good, solid five,” Spence said. “The others are not too far behind in workouts. We have a good core, and we’ve talked about thinking in terms of pack mentality. We think we might surprise some people.”
The postseason format has been changed, with the IHSAA eliminating the semistate level from the series. BNL will still host a sectional.
BNL will make its debut on Saturday at South Putnam.
