MITCHELL – The Mitchell City Council approved pay increases for city employees during their meeting on Monday.
Police officers will receive a $5,000 pay raise. The hope is to keep officers from leaving the department to seek higher-paying job opportunities.
Currently, a Mitchell Police officer receives $49,000 a year.
Due to police staffing issues, deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department are covering the second and third-shift duties for the City of Mitchell.
The city council also approved a four percent increase for elected leaders and employees.
Councilwoman Vicky Schlegel abstained from the vote.
