Traffic updates for Indiana State Archives building construction

INDIANA – In 2021, Governor Eric J. Holcomb and the Indiana State Legislature approved the construction of a new Indiana State Archives building that will house priceless documents and artifacts and make Indiana history accessible to everyone.

Construction will kick off with a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, August 15, 2023. Look for the new technology Pepper Construction will introduce that allows a person to hold up their phone by the site on the canal and see the renderings with a 30-second recorded message. Below are the changes in street and pedestrian traffic that may impact you.

Updates to the street and pedestrian traffic:

  • Construction of a new Indiana State Archives building will begin in August 2023 (area marked in orange on the image below).
  • Sidewalks and lane closures will occur on Ohio and New York Streets (areas marked in red on the image below).
  • Lane closures on Ohio Street will eliminate all street parking from the fire station east to the State Library and traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction.
  • New crosswalks with ramps, signage, and beacons will be installed to allow safe pedestrian passage around the closures (areas marked in green on the image below).
  • Preparation, including new crosswalk construction, may begin before the groundbreaking on August 15.
  • A detour will be in place for the walk on the east side of the canal between Ohio and New York Streets.

Construction will last 2.5 years and you can follow its progress at https://on.in.gov/archivesbuilding.
