JEFFERSONVILLE – Indiana State Police detectives are investigating a police-involved shooting in Jeffersonville after a suspect repeatedly fired rounds from within his apartment and also shot at responding officers.
As a result of their preliminary investigation, detectives believe around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, a resident at the AVIA apartments on North Shore Drive in Jeffersonville called 911 requesting a welfare check on another apartment complex resident, 65-year-old Richard D. Glass.
The caller reported Glass had allegedly made concerning statements that he was going back to prison before walking back into his apartment. Shortly after receiving the first call, 911 received a second call, this time from Richard Glass himself. Glass claimed someone was trying to hack his phone and requested officers respond. Glass also stated that he had a firearm and did not want to use it on the person hacking his phone.
Jeffersonville police and EMS responded to the scene; however, Glass would not open the door to speak with officers saying he did not believe they were officers.
When dispatchers contacted Glass on the phone, he said he did not think the people in the hallway were police and repeated statements about having a gun. Officers then decided to pull back from the door in an effort to de-escalate the situation. Glass continued to make statements on the phone about having a firearm and alluded to firing it at others.
A short time later, officers were able to make visual contact with Richard Glass from an adjacent apartment building window and confirmed Glass was in possession of at least two firearms.
A 911 caller then reported hearing shots fired from within the apartment building. Around 11:30 pm, officers who had staged outside the building reported that Glass was shooting from his apartment window towards them.
Glass reportedly fired two more times from his window, and all attempts to make contact with him were unsuccessful. Officers then heard more shots coming from inside the apartment, and when Glass once again pointed the weapon out the window, he was shot by a responding SWAT team member.
After confirming Richard Glass was deceased, officers checked the entire apartment complex for the safety and welfare of all other residents. No other residents or officers were harmed in the incident.
Indiana State Troopers from the Indianapolis Post contacted and made a notification to family members of the deceased.
ISP detectives are investigating at the request of Jeffersonville Police Chief Kenny Kavanaugh.
