Report of a man dancing in the street lands him in jail

BEDFORD – A man was arrested Friday morning after Bedford Police officers responded to 515 15th Street Friday following a report of a suspicious male in the area.

The caller reported a male was in the middle of the road dancing in front of JC Playhouse Daycare.

When police arrived at 6:20 a.m. they found 36-year-old Casey Staggs in the parking lot of the Circle K station at 16th and H streets.

Casey Staggs

Staggs was walking in jerky steps, flailing his arms and grinding his teeth.

He then crossed 16th Street and entered the parking lot of Ruler Foods. He continued through the parking lot, making exaggerated movements with his arms, legs, and head.

An officer stopped Staggs at the corner of 16th and F streets.

Police say Staggs was intoxicated and was sweating profusely. Police say Staggs could not open his mouth fully to speak due to the intense muscle spasms in his jaw. Staggs admitted that he had been using methamphetamine for several days and that he was currently high on methamphetamine.

Staggs was detained. He was cooperative but had to be uncuffed and re-cuffed several times due to his uncontrollable body movements. Once at the Bedford Police Department, IU Health LifeLine EMS arrived to evaluate Staggs and he was medically cleared.

He was transported to the Lawrence County Jail on a charge of public intoxication.
