LAWRENCE CO. – Next Wednesday, August 30, at 11 a.m. the White River Humane Society is breaking ground on the donated land where they plan to build their new shelter.
Speedway has permitted those invited to the ceremony to park at the station since the new location does not yet have parking. A bus or shuttle will be ferrying guests from the gas station to the location, so invitation recipients are asked to arrive early.
The shuttle system from Speedway to the White River Humane Society location will begin around 10:15 a.m.
The new shelter has been a dream for a long time. The White River Humane Society’s goal is to finally be able to address the inadequacies of the current shelter.
The current shelter has been in operation for many decades and has helped thousands of animals. In its current state, the ventilation and air circulation, drainage, and kennels have deteriorated, making it difficult to perform daily operations. The size of the shelter space has also proven to be inadequate.
White River Humane Society knows that animals that are scared are less likely to put their best, friendly selves forward, and thereby less likely to be adopted. The current design of the existing shelter is also inadequate by today’s standards because kennel-to-kennel visibility adds to the stress and anxiety of shelter pets.
The new shelter will be able to address these problems, providing a safer, healthier adoption center for the animals that are in their care.
The new facility will help to ease the burden of over-population, and with healthier, happier animals, the likelihood of adoption, and keeping numbers down, will increase.
This is a positive, healthy step for animals needing adoption in Lawrence County and those who, like the White River Humane Society, strive day after day to help them find homes.
