BEDFORD – After a week of heat, Bedford North Lawrence came out cold.
Last week’s ultra-high temperature indexes forced BNL to postpone two matches and practice inside for the majority of the summer heat wave. But when North Daviess turned on the competitive fires, the Stars were still in air-conditioned mode during a 5-0 loss to the Cougars on Monday afternoon.
North Daviess set the tone with early leads on every court, and BNL (3-5) never shifted out of neutral.
“More than anything, last week threw off our physical intensity, going out there and competing, working hard,” BNL coach Chris Kurtz said. “We got taken out of that zone.
“It seemed like we never got started. I was waiting, and we normally start slow, so I was waiting for it to pick up. But we stayed right there, never really got out of the gate. We’ll have to do better.”
Max Toy conquered Jayden Kemp 6-3, 6-1 at No.1 singles, Cam Sassaro stopped Orion Hill 6-1, 6-0 at No.2, and Blake Huff topped Jackson Corey 6-2, 6-2 at No.3.
In doubles, the Cougars dropped only four games. Carter Jesse and Aiden Pridemore handled Drew Stephenson and Neal Patel 6-2, 6-1 at No.1. Aden Graber and Cody Loheider swept past Gavin Baker and Braxton Fugate 6-0, 6-1 at No.2.
“This is a match I thought we would be competitive, and we just weren’t,” Kurtz said. “We’ll write this one off, come back and try again. It wasn’t our night, we can do better.”
The Stars will host Columbus East on Tuesday.
