BEDFORD – Seymour pulled out a three-set victory at No.1 doubles to finish off a 5-0 sweep of Bedford North Lawrence during boys high school tennis action on Thursday.
The Owls rallied after dropping the first set, as Shun Takeuchi and Joel Stevens bounced back to edge Drew Stephenson and Neal Patel 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 (in a super tiebreaker). Drew Handloser and Xavier DuBois topped Gavin Baker and Braxton Fugate 6-0, 6-3 at No.2 doubles.
“I was especially excited about what Drew and Neal were able to do,” BNL coach Chris Kurtz said. “They are active and mobile, and tonight they incorporated some things they’ve been working on in practice. So I’m encouraged about what they were able to do against a really talented Seymour team.”
Seymour dropped only nine games in the three singles matches. Joe Schmidt stopped Jayden Kemp 6-1, 6-2 at No.1, Parker Thompson defeated Orion Hill 6-2, 6-2 at No.2, and Carter Stein dropped Isaac Bridges (making his return to action) 6-0, 6-2 at No.3.
“We’re excited to get Isaac back,” Kurtz said. “He’s a steady player and actually played really well tonight in the return.
“Things are coming together for us right now and I think we’re very close to setting the lineup for the rest of season. There are still a few things to work on and evaluate in doubles, but tonight was definitely a step in the right direction for that. And just in general, I think we played well tonight. Every one of our guys gave it his all the entire time.”
The Stars (4-6) will host Brownstown on Sept. 7.
