NEW PALESTINE – On September 9, 2023, from 10 a.m. until noon EST, the Department of Natural Resources is hosting a unique in-person event.
Join DNR Aquatic Biologist, Brant Fisher, as he teaches us about the aquatic world through the lens of a stream fish survey. Fisheries biologists conduct stream fish surveys for various reasons throughout Indiana. This event will give participants a behind-the-scenes view of what these surveys can teach us, what species live below the water’s surface, and how information gained from the surveys is used to keep Indiana’s rivers and streams healthy.
This event will take place in Buck Creek at Southeastway Park, in New Palestine, southeastern Marion County. Meet for this event in the parking lot by Shelter House 5. Attendees will have the opportunity to listen to the information from the shore or get into the stream to see sampling up close. If you plan to get into the water, please wear clothes and shoes you are comfortable getting wet and dirty. Water shoes, old gym shoes, or shoes that cover your toes and have a back are recommended. Nets will be provided for people who are interested in assisting with sampling, but participants are also welcome to bring their own.
Please bring any water or snacks you will want for the duration of the event.
This event is open to participants of all ages, but children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. If you are over 18 years old and would like to assist with netting fish during the survey, you must have a valid Indiana fishing license. Children under 18 do not require a fishing license to assist with fish collection. Note: Adults don’t need a fishing license to attend this event, only to assist with fish collection.
Registration is required for this event.
