MITCHELL – A Spencer man was arrested on meth charges after being stopped for a traffic violation.
A Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department deputy was parked in the Marion Township Volunteer Fire Department on Thursday, September 7th when he noticed a vehicle traveling north on State Road 37 and then making an abrupt turn onto Teke Burton Drive. The officer followed.
The vehicle passed under a street lamp and the officer noticed the vehicle had a taillight out. The vehicle then failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Teke Burton Drive and Hancock Avenue. The vehicle then continued to State Road 37 where the officer stopped the driver of the SUV.
The driver, 24-year-old Zachary Behr told the officer he had been pulled over three times in Salem due to the inoperable taillight. When asked for his driver’s license and registration Behr told the officer he didn’t have them because he had just purchased the vehicle and was waiting for the registration from the BMV.
The officer then asked how he had a license plate but no registration. Behr could not explain why. He was then asked if he was trying to evade the officer and Behr told the officer he was lost. While speaking to the officer Behr found the title to the vehicle.
Canine Deny Joe was then requested to the scene. The dog alerted officers to possible drugs in the SUV.
In the vehicle, police found a glass smoking pipe containing meth. Police also found several pieces of crystal meth in the driver’s seat and floorboard.
Behr was arrested on a charge of possession of meth and transported to jail. His vehicle was towed by Jackson’s Heavy Haul.
