BLOOMINGTON – WFIU Public Radio is hosting an event with Eric Deggans, NPR’s first full-time TV critic and media analyst. A Conversation with Eric Deggans takes place on Wednesday, September 27 at 7 p.m. at the Indiana University Cinema.
Deggans will be in conversation with Alex Chambers, host of WFIU’s radio program and podcast Inner States. Deggans will discuss the actors’ and writers’ strike, the ever-evolving world of media and entertainment, the best and worst television has to offer, and what the landscape of television will look like in the future.

A journalist for more than three decades, Deggans joined NPR in 2013, providing reviews, feature stories, commentary, and guest hosting services for the network’s shows such as Morning Edition and All Things Considered, along with writing for npr.org and appearing on NPR podcasts such as Consider This, Life Kit, Code Switch, Pop Culture Happy Hour, and It’s Been a Minute. From 2017 to 2021, he served as a contributor and media analyst for MSNBC and NBC News.
Deggans is also the author of Race-Baiter: How the Media Wields Dangerous Words to Divide a Nation, which is a look at how prejudice, racism, and sexism fuel some elements of modern media, published in October 2012 by Palgrave Macmillan.
Deggans earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science and journalism from Indiana University in 1990. In 2020, he received the Distinguished Alumni Service Award from Indiana University – the institution’s highest alumni honor. He was also named a distinguished alumnus of Indiana University’s Media School of Journalism and Communications in 2016.
