Harry Eugene “Gene” Atchison, 93, of Mitchell, passed away Sunday, September 17, 2023, at Indiana University Health Hospice House.
Born October 7, 1929, in Bryantsville, he was the son of Jack Alvin Atchison and Dolly Jane (Blevins) Ingram.
Gene was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 250, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107, and was active in the Honor Guard. Gene worked as a truck driver for Architectural Stone Sales and Hall Bros Transport. He loved driving around, socializing, and working in his garden.
Surviving are his children, Darlene (Kenneth) Irwin of Mitchell, Roland Eugene (Linda) Atchison of Orleans, and Glenda Lea (Larry) Duncan of Mitchell; eleven grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
His parents; children, Robert Eugene Atchison and David Bryant Atchison; grandson, Brian Scott Johnson; siblings, Leon Atchison, Leland Atchison, Loretta Rush, Bertha Young, Erma Pemberton, Earl “Buck” Atchison, and an infant brother; and the mother of the children, Alma Owens, preceded him in death.
The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, September 21, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Reverend Robert Martindale officiating. Military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post No. 250 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107. Burial will be at Mitchell Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday at the funeral home.
