Obituary: Raymond E. Deckard

September 11, 1929 – September 19, 2023

Raymond E. Deckard, 94, of Bedford, passed away peacefully at 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, at IU Health Hospice House in Bloomington surrounded by family.

Born September 11, 1929, in Lawrence Co., he was the son of Raymond and Oral Nadine (Sears) Deckard. He married Marilea Britt on June 27, 1964, and she preceded him in death. He was a stock clerk for Public Service, Cinergy, and Duke Energy. He was a veteran of the Korean War serving with the U.S. Marine Corps and a handyman who could fix almost anything. He loved old TV Westerns, NASCAR, and classic country music .

Survivors include a daughter, Valerie Deckard, of Bloomington; a son, Jim Deckard, and wife, Marquita, of Bedford; a granddaughter, Nokomis Deckard, of Bedford; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Deckard, of Bedford; numerous nieces and nephews; his caregivers, Rebecca, Linda, and Alyssa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, four brothers, Charles Albert “Bill”, Rance, Mansel, and Kenneth; four sisters, Esther, Helen, and 2 in infancy.

Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 23rd at Day & Carter Mortuary. A graveside service will be conducted at a later date in Green Hill Cemetery.

To paraphrase the lyrics of Jimmy Buffett: “Through 94 years of perpetual motion, if he likes you then he’ll smile, then he’ll say, Jimmy, some of it’s magic, some of it’s tragic, but I had a good life all the way.”
