CARMEL – Bedford North Lawrence finished tied for 14th in the first round of the IHSAA state golf championships at Prairie View Golf Club on Friday.
The Stars carded a team score of 375, settling for a tie with Jasper in the 18-team field. No.4 Westfield took the overnight lead in the 36-hole event with 306, while No.1 Carmel was one shot back at 307. No.2 Homestead finished third at 313.
The No.14 Stars, making their second straight trip to the state level, didn’t have any scores under 90. Kenley Craig and Chloe McFaddin posted 93s, while Kinleigh Root posted 94. Ellie Horton capped the team scoring with 95, and freshman Sammie Nusbaum added a 97.
Craig had four pars, McFaddin added five pars, and Root totaled five pars. But Prairie View, a most difficult layout, forced the Stars to card some big numbers and come up short of their goals.
“The first round is out of the way now and we’re ready for some redemption tomorrow,” BNL coach Kori Johnston said. “We had a few too many big numbers today that we can easily avoid tomorrow.
“We had some scores improved from the State Preview (a tournament on the same course earlier this season), but we definitely have potential to be much lower. We talked through some shot strategies and will make adjustments. Tomorrow is a new day and I’m confident it’ll be a better one.”
Westfield’s Samantha Brown was the individual leader with a sensational 4-under 68 that included four birdies and no bogeys.
BNL, making its 10th state finals appearance, will compete in the second round on Saturday.
