BEDFORD – A Bedford man was arrested on Wednesday after a Bedford Police officer heard an engine accelerate while on patrol in the area of 7th Street and Lincoln Avenue at 7:35 p.m.
The officer then spotted a dark-colored Chevrolet sedan traveling at a high rate of speed traveling north on Lincoln Avenue. The vehicle accelerated past the officer revved the engine and then slammed on the brakes as the driver approached the red light at the intersection of 5th Street and Lincoln Avenue. The driver then accelerated when the light turned green. The driver made a left-hand turn onto 4th Street and came to a rapid stop at Dairyland.
The officer initiated a traffic stop. The driver stopped the vehicle, threw his left hand out the window, and opened the door with his right hand. The officer ordered the driver to stay in the vehicle, but he continued to exit and walk toward the officer. The driver did comply when the officer asked him to stop and put his hands above his head.
The driver was identified as 25-year-old Dalton McCloud, of Bedford.
McCloud apologized for his actions. The officer said McCloud smelled of alcohol. He told the officer he had been drinking at Shorty’s Den and left after an unknown female offered him meth. He said he got upset and he just needed to get away.
When asked for his driver’s license McCloud admitted his license was suspended. He then admitted he had drank a six-pack of beer and several ‘shooters”.
McCloud failed several field sobriety tests. He submitted to a portable breath test and had a blood-alcohol level of 0.183 percent. He was then transported to IU Health Bedford Hospital for a blood draw.
McCloud was arrested on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a prior conviction, OWI endangerment, and driving while his driver’s license was suspended with a prior conviction
