Police seize more than 50 grams of meth during a traffic stop, driver detained

BEDFORD – A traffic stop Wednesday on State Road 37 near the State Road 158 intersection resulted in the arrest of the 30-year-old driver and the seizure of more than 50 grams of methamphetamine.

An Indiana State Trooper stopped the vehicle, a 2005 Toyota Scion, after noticing the vehicle only had one working taillight.

Indiana State Trooper Ben Burris initiated the traffic stop and identified the driver as Brandon R. Smith, of Spencer.

Trooper Sam Gillespie and Bedford Police Department Officer Toby Gerkin assisted with the traffic stop and investigation.

During a search of the vehicle, a handgun was located under the driver’s seat, an H&R .22 caliber. Two glass smoking devices with meth residue were located in the trunk of the vehicle.

The driver-side door did not have a panel on the inside, and there was a black plastic box located inside the door. The box contained two plastic bags that contained approximately 58  grams of crystal meth.

Police arrested Smith on charges of dealing meth, possession of meth, unlawful carrying of a handgun, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
