BLOOMINGTON – Bedford North Lawrence finished sixth in the six-team Bloomington South Invitational during high school wrestling action on Saturday.
The Stars lost matches to Martinsville (74-6), Bloomington South (65-15), Center Grove (73-6), Pike (54-21) and Columbus North (42-28).
Despite the lack of team success, BNL had individual bright spots. Jaxon Powell recorded four wins on the mat. He topped Bloomington South’s Tristian Hicks (10-6 decision), Center Grove’s Miguel Flores (pin in 4:27), Pike’s A.J. Fleurant (pin in 51 seconds) and Columbus North’s Sam Mormino (pin in 49 seconds) at 175 pounds.
Ethan Stancombe won three contested matches, posting victories over Martinsville’s Shaine Harris (pin in 1:56), Pike’s Dyvon Jones (8-2 decision) and Columbus North’s Evan Saevre (pin in 4:49) at 165.
Other wins for BNL came from Jorj Filler (pinning South’s Brian Conley in 1:56 at 126), Tate Tanksley (trapping South‘s Mason Grubb in 5:39 at 190), Wyatt Philpott (pinning Columbus North’s Liam Curfman in 2:49 at 113), and Connor Roberts (defeating Columbus North’s Rogelio Utrera-Piedra 10-0 at 215).
“We knew today was going to be a tough competition with top-level teams,” BNL coach Chris Branam said. “Overall, I’m happy with the level of competitiveness the team showed. They didn’t back down, and several walked away with some really solid wins.”
BNL will host Bloomington North on Thursday.
