Mitchell man arrested on alcohol and domestic battery charges

BEDFORD – A Mitchell man was detained after fleeing the scene of a domestic fight.

On Friday, December 1 at 10:06 p.m. Bedford Police officers received a request from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department to be on the lookout for a white 2014 Jeep Cherokee driven by 28-year-old Michael Meadows, of Mitchell.

Meadows was wanted for questioning regarding his involvement in a domestic fight earlier in the day. The Sheriff’s Department requested officers to detain Meadows if he was located.

Bedford Police Officer Landon Jones was on patrols on 7th Street when he observed Meadow’s vehicle. The vehicle was traveling north on Lincoln Avenue, turned east onto 7th Street, and then south down an alley and parked on the southside of Shorty’s Den. The officer stopped Meadow and detained him. While placing Meadows in handcuffs the officer could smell the odor of alcohol on Meadow’s breath.

Meadows told the officer he “had some wine back at her place”.

Meadows said he had a glass of wine and two beers approximately 45 to 50 minutes earlier. Meadows said he had just left Springville and was meeting his brother at Shorty’s.

Meadows failed several field sobriety tests and refused to take other tests when asked.

He was then asked to submit to a breathalyzer and refused, becoming argumentive with officers and insisting he did nothing wrong.

Police found an alcoholic beverage lying on the passenger side floorboard.

Lawrence County Superior Court Judge Robert Cline issued a warrant for a blood draw and Meadows was transported to IU Health Bedford Hospital. He was then transported to jail where he submitted to a breath test and had a blood-alcohol content of 0.286.

Meadows was transported to the hospital due to his high level of alcohol. Once medically cleared he was transported back to jail on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a prior conviction, OWI refusal, and domestic battery.
