BEDFORD – The last match was the most exciting. Bedford North Lawrence’s problem was the lack of healthy bodies.
The Stars forfeited six weight classes and could not make up those 36 free points as Seymour posted a 48-33 team triumph on Thursday night. BNL did win five of the seven contested battles on the mat, capped by a thrilling overtime win by Jorj Filler at 126 pounds.
Filler trailed 4-2 with less than 30 seconds left, then scored a two-point reversal to force the sudden-death extra minute. He recorded a takedown for the winning points.
Other wins from the Stars included pins by Austin Clark (over Vaden Hanley in 3:45 at 157), Junior Arellano (over Philip Dacayo in 2:34 at 285) and Wyatt Philpott (over Leidan Mora in 1:32 at 113). Ethan Stancombe conquered Briley Compton by a 13-5 major decision at 165.
“I am very proud of the way we wrestled,” BNL assistant coach Mike Branam said. “We showed a confidence and determination that we don’t always see. Everyone went out there and gave their all. That is all we can ask of them. And tonight it paid off.”
BNL will compete in the Bo Henry Classic at Bloomington North on Saturday.
