Woman rescued from flood waters by off-duty Jackson County deputy

JACKSON CO. — An Indiana woman was rescued by an off-duty Jackson County deputy after she was trapped in her car, which was almost completely submerged.

On Saturday at about 5:30 p.m., according to a news release, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department Central Dispatch Center received a 911 call from a woman who said she was trapped in her vehicle stuck in flood waters in the 9000 block of County Road 50 North, in the Chestnut Ridge Bottoms.

The woman identified as Jennifer Colvin of North Vernon. She said the water was rushing into the vehicle at an alarming rate.

Deputy Mark Holt, who was off duty and was in the area, responded to the scene.

Deputy Holt found the 2019 Honda CRV on the north side of the road with water rising up over the hood. The water inside was up to the woman’s neck by that point.

Deputy Holt entered the water without hesitation and got Colvin out of the vehicle. He then placed her in his patrol vehicle to get her warm and transported her to Schneck Medical Center.

Other deputies and the Seymour Police Department cleared a path for him to get her there as fast as possible to treat her for possible hypothermia.

“Deputy Holt’s quick response kept this incident from being a lot worse,” said Sheriff Rick Meyer.
