MARTINSVILLE – Investigators from the Indiana State Police Bloomington Post have initiated an investigation into the shooting of a Morgan County Sheriff’s Department deputy following a welfare check conducted Tuesday morning at a residence located on Beech Grove Road.
Just after 7:30 a.m., Morgan County 911 Dispatch was contacted by a third party regarding a concerning social media post from a friend. Morgan County Sheriff’s Department deputies were dispatched to a residence on Beech Grove Road to conduct a welfare check on a 15-year-old juvenile.
While attempting to make contact with the juvenile, Deputy Mallory Schwab was checking the perimeter of the house when gunfire from inside the residence struck her in the right shoulder. Deputies, who had responded with Schwab, immediately moved her to a place of safety and provided emergency medical aid. She was transported by ambulance to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment.
Morgan County law enforcement agencies and ISP troopers from the Bloomington District responded to the scene, which was treated as a barricaded subject. Morgan and Johnson County SWAT teams were activated and attempted to contact the juvenile. Officers utilized several tools in an attempt to de-escalate the situation, including a drone and a robot to check the interior of the residence, as well as the deployment of tear gas into the house.
Officers eventually were able to determine the juvenile was deceased inside the residence. None of the officers or SWAT Team members involved discharged their weapons in this incident.
Upon resolution of the barricaded incident, Morgan County Sheriff Rich Myers requested the Indiana State Police conduct the investigation.
Detectives and crime scene investigators spent Tuesday afternoon processing the residence.
