LAWRENCE COUNTY– Sheriff Day announced to promotion of 3 veteran deputies on Thursday:
Lonnie Johnson has been promoted to patrol captain and leads the second shift crew. Capt. Johnson began his career with the department as a jail officer in 1990, becoming a road deputy in 1992. He has served many roles in the department, most recently as the day shift sergeant. His years of experience and non-stop work ethic are invaluable to the department and the community.
Michael Williams has been promoted to our outstanding detective division. Det. Williams has been with our department since 2019; prior to that, he served 2 years with Nashville PD and 1 year with Mitchell PD. He has also fulfilled many roles during his time here, including a canine handler, instructor, field training officer, and SWAT member.
Chris Griggs has been named our new narcotics detective. He joined the department in 2023, but he brings 25 years of police experience. He previously worked for Nashville PD, Brown County Sheriff’s Office, and the Indiana State Police (retired early after 15+ years). During his law enforcement career, he has been a canine handler, detective, field training officer, and a member of the Indiana State Police Bloomington District ACES.
Sheriff Day congratulates the newly promoted officers and welcomes them to their new roles. “These three outstanding officers have over 65 years of combined law enforcement experience, and I have worked with all of them for years. They have made many positive impacts on our communities, and I am excited for them to continue their outstanding service in the new roles. It is an honor and a privilege to promote each of them. Congratulations, gentlemen!”
