MITCHELL – Marion Township Volunteer Fire Department Stations 5 and 2 were alerted to a structure fire at 1738 State Road 60 East at 5:13 p.m. on Sunday.
According to Chief Paul Gillespie, heavy smoke was visible in the area, and dispatch advised that they were receiving reports of loud explosions.
Engine 52 arrived on the scene and found an approximately 30 x 60 garage with fire throughout.
Two lines were utilized to attack the fire and protect a residence that was near the garage.
The fire was under control at 6:03 p.m
Property owners were cleaning out the garage and returned to the residence approximately 10 minutes later and noticed the fire.
The cause of the fire is undetermined after investigation; however, it is believed to have started near the wood stove in the garage that was in operation.
All fire units cleared the scene at 7:33 p.m.
This was the second structure fire that Marion and Mitchell had responded to on Sunday.
At 8:13 a.m., Marion and Mitchell were alerted to a structure fire at 1643 Meridian Road. When Engine 52 arrived, they found an approximately 20 x 70 Single trailer engulfed in flames.
Crews used two attack lines to bring the fire under control at 9:01 a.m. but remained on the scene for salvage and overhaul.
A family was displaced due to the fire, and the Red Cross was contacted to assist the family.
