Intoxicated man injures Bedford Police Officers

BEDFORD – A Bloomington man was detained on Friday after Bedford Police officers were called to the area of 20th and N Streets at 6:36 p.m. following a report of a man yelling to call 911.

When Capt. Dakoda Emmons arrived, he spoke to a a woman sitting on her porch in the 1000 block of 20th Street. She said the yelling was east of her home near the Rosemount Motel.

Witnesses told police the man was using the “N-word” and yelling other obscenities and saw him lying in the roadway on 20th Street.

Capt. Emmons found 45-year-old Jeremy Browning lying face down in the doorway of his hotel room. An ambulance was called to the scene. Browning suffered a cut to his forehead and was complaining someone had attacked him.

Police say Browning was intoxicated.

While being evaluated by an IU Health Hospital ambulance crew, Browning got verbally aggressive with the ambulance crew. He refused medical treatment and was asked to get out of the ambulance. At one point, police say Browning got into the face of one of the EMT’s face and began pointing his finger in her face in an aggressive manner.

Capt. Emmons grabbed Browning’s arm to get him to leave the ambulance. Browning refused and was ordered to stop being uncooperative. He then tensed up and fell out of the ambulance. While falling out of the ambulance, he struck Capt. Emmons in the mouth.

Officers attempted to place Browning in handcuffs but he tensed up and had to be forcibly placed in handcuffs. He refused to walk and had to be carried to Officer Sarah Haluda’s vehicle. He refused to sit in the car. He then began kicking at Major Clint Swanson, who was able to force Browning into the vehicle.

Officer Haluda transported Jeremy to IU Health Hospital for evaluation. Once at the hospital, he refused to get out of the vehicle. He had to be physically removed from the vehicle by the officers. He then lay on the ground and refused to get up. He was placed in a wheelchair and wheeled into the emergency room.

Despite insisting that he was disabled and could not use his legs, Browning kicked Officer Haluda and then threw his legs up onto the wall, placing his feet above his head. He attempted to stand up and turned on the officer at one point. As a result of Browning’s behavior, he was handcuffed to a hospital bed.

After some time, Browning requested to use the restroom. He was provided with a urinal and one of his hands was uncuffed from the bed. Browning had access to the urinal for an extended period; however, he refused to use it and became distracted by his behavior several times.

Browning became agitated, verbally aggressive, and argumentative. The urinal hit the floor and Browning insisted that “no one told him where to pee” and continued to urinate on the hospital floor.

There was a scuffle when Officer Taylor Daughtery attempted to cuff Browning back to the hospital bed.

Officer Haluda placed her hand on Browning’s chin and jaw to keep him from spitting at her, and Browning bit down on her fingers and left an open abrasion on her right hand.

Once medically cleared, police had to forcibly place Browning back into the police car. While doing so, Browning kicked Officer Haluda in the side of the face.

He had to be forced out of the vehicle and placed in a restraint chair during the booking process.

Browning was detained on charges of resisting law enforcement, battery against a public safety official, public intoxication, and disorderly conduct, and he was transported to the Lawrence County Jail.
