BLOOMINGTON – A Monroe County Circuit Court jury will determine if 24-year-old De Juan Lamar Kelley, who is accused of shooting and killing a man at a Bloomington gas station in 2020, is guilty of the crime.
Judge Mary Ellen Diekhoff is presiding. Representing Kelley are attorneys Erin Rose McNeil and Katharine C Liell.
Prosecutor Erika Oliphant and Deputy Prosecutor Trisha Bushey will present the case for the state.
Kelley was arrested by police in Kansas City, Missouri, on July 28, 2020, for the shooting death of 39-year-old Michael Parker.
Kelley, who was 20 at the time of the crime, is facing charges of murder, attempted murder, and carrying a handgun without a license.
According to court documents, around 2 a.m. on June 7, 2020, Bloomington Police officers rushed to the Circle S gas station on Walnut Street after a report a person was shot.
Officers arrived and found Parker shot in the neck in the driver’s seat of his vehicle. He was later declared dead at IU Health Bloomington Hospital.
After interviewing witnesses and reviewing security camera footage, police learned Parker and three women stopped at the gas station for the women to use the bathroom. Parker sat in the car at the gas pump.
While inside, the women reported a group of men, along with Kelley, entered the store. One of the women told police she used to be in a relationship with Kelley, and there was still ongoing tension. Kelley and the woman reportedly began shouting at one another before Kelley allegedly pulled out a gun.
Surveillance footage shows the three women leaving the gas station and Kelley following. He goes around the back of the car to the driver-side door. Kelley then allegedly fired two to three shots into the vehicle, hitting and killing Parker. Kelley then runs south from the gas station. Police reported finding two 9mm shell casings at the scene.
