Indiana State Police Investigating an Officer-Involved Shooting in Delaware County

DALEVILLE– Indiana State Police Detectives from the Pendleton District are investigating an officer-involved shooting that stemmed from a previous event on February 15, 2024, after a suspect, who was a passenger in a vehicle stopped by the Daleville Police Department, reportedly shot at police and fled on foot into a nearby residential area. The Indiana State Police utilized the helicopter and did not locate the suspect during the initial incident.

This morning, deputies from the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department returned to the scene to process evidence from the initial incident and located the suspect nearby. The suspect, identified as Trenton W. Patterson, 49, of Daleville, reportedly pointed a firearm at the deputies. One deputy fired at Patterson. Patterson again fled on foot and barricaded himself in a vehicle located near the intersection of State Road 32 and Dover Street.

Police surrounded the vehicle and began evacuating nearby residents. Officers at the scene attempted to de-escalate the situation by negotiating a peaceful surrender with Patterson. After approximately an hour of negotiations, deputies from the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team deployed a chemical agent into the vehicle. Following the deployment of the chemical agent into the vehicle, officers reported hearing a gunshot inside the vehicle. Police took Patterson into custody and transported him to Indiana University Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie for a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Patterson is listed in critical, but stable condition and is under police security at the hospital.

The identity of the deputy who fired a weapon at Patterson will not be released this time.

Per department policy, the deputy will be placed on administrative leave until the investigation is complete and the Delaware County Prosecutor has had an opportunity to review the report.

This is an active investigation by the Indiana State Police, and when completed will be turned over to the Delaware County Presecutor’s Office for review.

There is no further information to be released.
