HELTONVILLE – Firefighters from multiple fire departments responded to a garage fire after a neighbor called 911, reporting the fire in the 100 block of Salem Road at 5:30 a.m. Sunday.
The neighbor told Central Dispatch explosions were coming from the garage.
Firefighters from Pleasant Run Township, Shawswick Township Volunteer Fire Department, and Owen Township VFD in Jackson County responded. Also responding were Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department deputies and an IU Lifeline Ambulance crew.
When firefighters arrived, they found the garage engulfed in flames. They evacuated the residents from their homes. They were sleeping and unaware of the fire.
Firefighters were able to contain the blaze preventing it from damaging the home that was approximately 100 feet from the garage.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
