BEDFORD – The Lawrence County Commissioners opened bids for paving projects Tuesday morning.
Three bids were submitted. Those bids were taken under advisement.
Highway Director Brandi Webb praised highway crews for their dedication and tireless work clearing snow during the county’s last snowstorm on Friday and Saturday, February 16-17.
The Lawrence County Commissioner approved a contract with CLR for $2.6 million to replace Bridge 150. The county will pay $319,536.10. The bridge was closed on September 5, 2023.
Webb reported that the walls on the bridge’s east side are complete, and crews are working on the west walls and expect to have them completed next week.
In March, crews will begin placing beams.
Webb requested permission to acquire three easements for Bridge 172 on Cement Plant Road over Leathercreek Road. Crews will replace the bridge and make a road realignment for $305,023.30.
Webb also reported that the Indiana Department of Transportation will work on a rock slide on State Road 60.
They are working on a detour plan, but Commissioner Dustin Gabhart was concerned about the detour route and big trucks becoming stuck on the county roadways. He requested Webb reach out to INDOT and see if they could close one lane of State Road 60 while addressing the issue.
Sheriff Greg Day reported 86 inmates in the jail Tuesday morning; of those, 72 were males, 14 were females, six Department of Correction holds, three parole holds, and six Level 6 felons.
The Greene County Sheriff’s Department has agreed to hold Lawrence County DOC prisoners at their new jail facility, which will help decrease the inmate population at the Lawrence County Jail.
“We transported several there this last week,” he added.
Chief Probation Officer Nedra Brock-Fleetwood sought permission to apply for two Indiana Department of Corrections grants. The grants will total $893,600. The commissioners approved the requests.
Vice President Rodney Fish said officials are reviewing the county’s phone line plan with ESI.
“We are looking into the contract,” added Fish. “We have been with this group for four to five years and are looking at what to do in the future. We have a proposed contract available for $4,355 a month. We want to make sure we are doing the right thing.”
