LAWRENCE COUNTY- In 2022, the closure of the Ascension St. Vincent Dunn Hospital in Bedford threatened to create an “OB desert” and loss of accessible healthcare in the region. The closure would potentially impact workforce attractiveness for nearby NSWC Crane and other businesses. Southern Indiana Community Health Care (SICHC), IU Health Bedford, and Indiana Health Centers (IHC) worked and collaborated together to ensure access to quality healthcare, and SICHC brought its obstetrics, prenatal, and family care to the region. IHC took on the WIC program from Dunn.
The three organizations stepped up with local community leaders to close the potential healthcare service gap. SICHC opened initial facilities in Bedford and Mitchell and expanded to their new Lincoln Plaza facility earlier this year.
SICHC, IU Health, IHC, and community leaders are gathering to celebrate the sustaining of quality healthcare and averting the potential loss of affordable services. The event will include a ribbon cutting for SICHC’s expanded Lincoln Plaza facility.
The event will take place Tuesday, March 12, at noon, at 629 Lincoln Avenue in Bedford. The event will stream on Facebook live here.
