BEDFORD – Casey Brown, accused of murdering 31-year-old Kobe Stancombe of Bedford, appeared in Lawrence County Superior Court I before Judge John Plummer III for his initial hearing Monday afternoon.
While heavily guarded, 38-year-old Brown was given a device to help hear and answer questions. Brown shot himself during a stand-off with officers at the Hucks in Paoli on Saturday, February 25.
According to police, Brown, Bradley Harper, and Stancombe were all together in the Jeep when the shooting occurred. After the shooting of Stancombe, Brown attempted to shoot the female who fled from the vehicle. He then held Harper, who was driving, against his will. He then made Harper flee the scene.
Brown and Harper were detained after police spotted the Jeep at the Hucks on Main Street in Paoli. Officers conducted a felony stop and ordered Brown and Harper out of the vehicle. Haper complied, but Brown refused. They attempted to negotiate and utilized numerous less lethal techniques, including deploying pepper balls and gas canisters into the Jeep. However, Brown, who was displaying a firearm, continued to disregard commands and refused to surrender.
An hours-long stand-off ensued and ended when Brown shot himself. Officers immediately removed Brown from the vehicle and administered life-saving measures. Brown was taken by ambulance to IU Health in Paoli. He was then flown to the University of Louisville Hospital. He was released on Friday, March 8, and transported to the Lawrence County Jail to face charges of murder, attempted murder, and criminal confinement while armed with a deadly weapon.
Brown is being held in the Lawrence County Jail without bond.
