SHOALS – Sergeant Johnathan R. Wells has made history in Martin County as the first Drug Recognition Expert (DRE).
The Martin County Sheriff’s Department proudly announced his achievement on March 8, following his successful completion of the DRE training program.
Sergeant Wells underwent over 120 hours of intensive training. The program spanned three weeks, with the initial two weeks conducted at the Fishers Police Department and the final week in Jacksonville, Florida.
This training helps to identify various drugs and drug categories, as well as detect signs of impairment in drivers under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
DREs are a highly specialized unit, representing only about 1% of the law enforcement population. Indiana has 220 DREs, with Sergeant Wells being the first from Martin County.
