BLOOMFIELD—The Greene County Emergency Management Agency and the National Weather Service (NWS) will conduct their annual Tornado Spotter Course on Tuesday, April 2nd, from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at the Greene County Fair Grounds.
Just a year ago, tornados hit Sullivan, Owen, and Monroe counties bordering Greene County, emphasizing the importance of such a course.
“Knowing what a tornado looks like and what to do if it is a tornado cannot be stressed enough after the disaster of death and destruction, the tornados brought so close to home. You never know when it will be your turn,” said Roger Axe, Director of Greene County Emergency Management Agency. “The eclipse is around the corner. Many will be outside watching and camping. People must know what a tornado is, what to look for, and when to seek protection. We schedule our Tornado Spotter’s Course in January of each year. We moved the course to just before the eclipse for those reasons to better serve our citizens.” said
“We will also have enrollment for Greene County’s new Reverse 911 Warning System at the spotter’s course,” said Axe. “If you are enrolled in time of an emergency like a tornado, you will receive a warning notice on either your cell phone or your landline telephone. We have been working on this system for some time and can offer it to the public for free. The system can also notify you in case of hazardous materials, school safety incidents, and other perils.”
A Weather Alert Radio will be given to one lucky course attendee.
“These radios can alert if the power goes off and in the middle of the night,” Axe concluded. “The course is free and open to the public.”
